Podcast Ep 407 - You Don’t Need More Time—You Need This
What if the reason you feel overwhelmed in your business… isn’t because you don’t have enough time?
Because let’s be honest—how many times have you thought, “If I just had more time, I’d finally get everything done”?
More time to edit.
More time to post.
More time to fix your website.
More time to “figure things out.”
And yet, even when you do have time, you still find yourself staring at your to-do list… unsure where to start.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. And more importantly—this isn’t actually a time problem.
It’s a decision problem. And sometimes, an identity problem too.
There’s a moment that a lot of photographers experience. You sit down, ready to be productive, and suddenly everything feels equally important. Edit that session. Post on Instagram. Fix your pricing. Update your website. Follow up with that inquiry. Learn something new. Do everything.
So what happens?
You either jump between tasks, chasing quick wins that feel productive… or you freeze completely.
Not because you’re lazy. Not because you don’t care.
But because you don’t know what actually matters most.
Here’s the shift that changes everything:
In your business, there are only two main categories.
That’s it.
Client delivery and marketing.
Client delivery is anything tied to a paying client—shooting, editing, communication, and delivering galleries. This is always your top priority. No debate. Because without clients, there is no business.
And then there’s marketing—everything you do to bring in future clients. Posting, emailing, networking, blogging, following up, building your brand.
When you simplify your business into these two categories, something clicks.
Because suddenly, your long, overwhelming to-do list… isn’t as complicated as it felt.
But here’s where most photographers still get stuck.
Even inside “marketing,” there are still so many things you could do.
So you end up doing a little bit of everything… and moving forward in nothing.
That’s why the real game-changer isn’t doing more.
It’s choosing less.
Instead of trying to do everything, you only need three clear priorities at a time.
Not ten. Not twenty. Just three.
For example:
- Follow up with inquiries
- Reach out to potential clients
- Post consistently
Or:
- Book sessions
- Send offers
- Ask for referrals
The exact priorities matter less than the decision itself.
Because when you decide what matters, you stop wasting time on what doesn’t.
Most people hesitate here.
“What if I choose wrong?”
“What if this doesn’t work?”
So instead of choosing… you stay busy.
You tweak your website.
You watch another training.
It feels productive—but it keeps you stuck.
The real shift?
Focus on actions, not outcomes.
Instead of “I want five clients,”
ask: What actions lead to five clients?
Then make those actions your goal.
Because you can’t control the outcome—but you can control what you do.
Consuming more education won’t fix this.
If it doesn’t support your priorities—or you can’t apply it soon—it’s just adding noise.
Before doing anything, ask:
- Is this client delivery or marketing?
- Does this align with my top three priorities?
If not—don’t do it.
